MetaHuman Performers: When AI Characters Take the Stage at Live Events

At IMEX Frankfurt 2026, NewMedia debuted the MetaHuman Choir — a generative AI installation featuring photorealistic digital performers that reacted to audience interaction in real time. This post explains the technology behind AI-driven live performers, why major brands are adopting them, and what event planners need to know before putting a MetaHuman on their stage.

What Is a MetaHuman Performer?

A MetaHuman performer is a photorealistic digital human character — built using Unreal Engine's MetaHuman Creator framework or equivalent high-fidelity character pipelines — that is animated and driven in real time during a live event. Unlike pre-rendered CGI characters in video content, a MetaHuman performer exists in the live moment: it responds to the audience, adapts to the environment, and behaves differently in every performance.

The characters are displayed on high-resolution transparent LED screens, holographic projection systems, or as fulldome projections — making them appear to inhabit the physical event space alongside human attendees. At sufficient resolution and scale, the visual quality crosses the threshold where audiences genuinely question whether they are watching a real or digital performer.

The MetaHuman Choir at IMEX Frankfurt 2026

Developed by NewMedia in collaboration with IMEX and Visualmax, the MetaHuman Choir was the centrepiece installation of the IMEX Frankfurt 2026 show floor. The installation featured an ensemble of AI-generated choral performers rendered in real time, with generative AI driving both their visual appearance and their musical output in response to audience interaction.

Attendees could influence the performance through physical proximity, voice input, and gestural interaction. The choir's visual aesthetic, musical style, and choreography adapted continuously — no two performances were identical. The installation received editorial coverage across multiple MICE industry publications and was cited as one of the show's most-discussed activations.

Why Brands Are Adopting AI Performers

The appeal of AI-driven digital performers for brand events is multidimensional.

Complete creative control. A digital performer can embody any aesthetic, cultural reference, or brand identity — without the scheduling, contractual, or performance variables associated with human talent.

Infinite repeatability with variation. Unlike a human performer who delivers the same act, a generative AI performer creates a genuinely unique experience for every audience group — while maintaining brand consistency.

Scalability. The same AI performer can be deployed simultaneously across multiple screens, locations, or events without additional talent cost.

No cancellation risk. Digital performers do not fall ill, miss flights, or require rider accommodations.

Data-driven adaptation. AI performers can be configured to respond to real-time data inputs — audience demographics, social media sentiment, show schedule milestones — creating experiences that are dynamically personalised at scale.

What Event Planners Need to Know

Commissioning a MetaHuman performer installation is a different process from booking a human act or installing a standard AV system. Several considerations are specific to this format.

Lead time is longer than standard AV. Character development, AI training, interaction design, and real-time rendering pipeline setup typically require 8–14 weeks of pre-production. This is not a last-minute production category.

Display format matters enormously. The same MetaHuman character will create a very different impression on a transparent LED screen versus a holographic foil projection versus a fulldome surface. The display technology should be chosen in alignment with the event environment and the desired level of physical presence.

The MetaHuman Choir at IMEX 2026 demonstrated that AI performers are no longer a novelty or a prototype — they are a production-ready format capable of delivering measurable audience engagement and editorial coverage at major industry events.
